Breast Cancer Acid Reflux Association Study

Investigating whether shared dietary and environmental exposures may help explain an observed association between acid reflux in one partner and breast cancer in the other.

Research into Barrett’s esophagus and related gastrointestinal conditions has raised questions about whether certain cancers and reflux-related diseases may cluster within families or households because of shared dietary and environmental exposures.

The BCARAS Study investigates whether a similar shared-environment relationship may exist between acid reflux in one partner and breast cancer in the other.

Our preliminary survey data found that women whose partners had frequent acid reflux had approximately 2-fold higher odds of reporting breast cancer. These findings are preliminary and do not establish that reflux causes breast cancer. Instead, they raise the possibility that shared diet, lifestyle, or environmental exposures could contribute to both conditions—potentially manifesting as acid reflux in one partner and breast cancer in the other.

Studying reflux in the partner may also help reduce a potential source of bias. Women who themselves have acid reflux may take proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), and some research has suggested that PPI use may be associated with lower breast cancer risk. Studying the partner’s reflux therefore provides another way to examine the shared household environment without relying solely on the woman’s own reflux status.

BCARAS aims to determine whether this preliminary association can be replicated in larger and better-controlled populations and to identify which shared dietary or environmental factors may explain it.

Important: BCARAS is investigating an association and potential shared environmental factors. The current findings do not establish causation.

If future studies confirm that women whose partners have chronic acid reflux are at meaningfully higher risk of breast cancer, partner reflux could potentially become a new factor used in breast cancer risk assessment.

This could help identify a group of women who may benefit from earlier or more intensive breast cancer screening, including mammography before the standard screening age when clinically appropriate.

A similar risk-based approach is already used in other areas of cancer screening, where family history and other risk factors can lead physicians to recommend screening earlier than they would for the general population.

Ultimately, the goal of BCARAS is not simply to identify an association, but to determine whether information about a partner’s health and the couple’s shared environment could help identify women at increased breast cancer risk before cancer develops or is detected at a later stage.

He completed Harvard Medical School’s Global Clinical Scholars Research Training Program with a concentration in clinical trials. Dr. Omid is a physician and medical researcher with experience in clinical research, oncology, translational medicine, and scientific publishing. His background includes work involving prostate cancer, clinical trials, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, dermatology, and medical AI. He holds an MD and MPH from Tehran University of Medical Sciences and is pursuing advanced training in medical imaging and artificial intelligence at the University of British Columbia. For BCARAS, Dr. Omid will focus on developing partnerships with GERD clinics, breast cancer centers, physicians, and research organizations to support study recruitment and future clinical research collaborations.

KT is an experienced clinical development professional with a background in global Phase 3 breast cancer trials, study design, medical data review, and regulatory processes. For BCARAS, he will focus on outreach and partnership development with clinics, physicians, and research organizations to support study recruitment and future research collaborations.

BCARAS is an exploratory research initiative. Preliminary findings should not be interpreted as establishing that acid reflux causes breast cancer or as a recommendation to alter medical screening or treatment without guidance from a qualified healthcare professional.
